Publiée sous l’autorité de Paul Stubbs et Blandine Longre, cette très rigoureuse et élégante revue place la traduction au centre de son travail. L’anglais / anglo-américain, l’espagnol, le russe, le français jouent l’un vers l’autre, parfois l’un dans l’autre pour instruire le sens et la beauté de poèmes ou la précision d’essais critiques de haute qualité sous un thème sous-jacent : « Accept the Mystery », ou quand l’écrivain s’ouvre à l’antithèse de la réalité plutôt qu’au jeu naïf de l’éclaircissement d’un réel vécu comme opaque.

The Black Herald reste toujours cette revue dont l’élégance et une mise en page espacée ne démentent en rien la haute tenue d’ensemble. Proposés en version bilingue, les textes et les poèmes publiés donnent à lire des auteurs reconnus aux côtés de voix encore en devenir. Nous trouvons ici aussi bien Corso ou verger, Joyce ou Fentham. Le choix d’écrivains disparus ou bien encore vivants témoigne de cette volonté de dépasser les conventions et de mettre en avant seulement la voix. Ainsi Blandine Longre et Paul Stubbs proposent une revue inclassable et porteuse de mouvements.

Le duo que forment Blandine Longre et Paul Stubbs a relevé le gant. Voici que leur Black Herald (le « Héraut noir », en référence au premier recueil du Péruvien César Vallejo, publié en 1919) s’avance, élégant et porteur d’illuminations à colporter. Le principe est fondé sur une dynamique simple : proposer des textes d’auteurs actuels ou passés dans leur langue d’origine et les traduire, tantôt en français, tantôt en anglais.

January, 2011, witnessed the birth of a significant new literary magazine in Europe, The Black Herald. This immediately refreshing bilingual magazine is issued from Paris, which seemed fitting, since its pages held the work of poets, essayists and translators from across the European theatre of operations and beyond. The Black Herald Press editors put forward their commitment to multilingual inclusivity and a necessary avoidance of the ‘island bound verbiage’ or mainstream poetry workshop mentality that festoons so many literary magazines in the UK.

Glancing at my map of current English-language poetry, one of the most tantalizing regions is one that — at least in my school of cartography — is centered around a magazine called the Black Herald. Edited by poets Paul Stubbs and Blandine Longre, it is a concourse for strong and original English-language poetry, publishing interesting new poets like Will Stone, Mark Wilson, and Siddhartha Bose. It has also published more established writers (Clayton Eshleman being an example), and it maintains a constant dialogue with the dead. Or perhaps more accurately: the “dead,” because in its pages the likes of Hart Crane, W.S. Graham, Cesar Vallejo, Georges Rodenbach, Osip Mandelstam, August Stramm, and James Joyce are blazingly alive in the company of the newer writers. The Black Herald’s gathering of voices extends to a wide array of current French writers. The magazine is published out of Paris, and is bi-lingual: each poem, story, or essay it publishes is printed in English and French. The fact that the Black Herald is a Parisian magazine is one of the most exciting things about it: it is, in part, an expression of international literature in Paris now, something different from a nostalgia for Montmartre or Montparnasse during the Belle Epoque. All the same, the Black Herald is recognizably in the lineage of that Paris, and of other strands in the city’s artistic past: the phantasmagorical Paris of Baudelaire and Rimbaud, as well as the scholarly and violent medieval Paris of Villon, the hungry outlaw-poet.
